The Methodist Health System Family Medicine Residency Program is long established, founded in 1980 by Frank Crawford, MD and Allen Fain, MD. The residency was placed on the Methodist Charlton Medical Center campus, allowing it to be the sole training program at that hospital.
The program started with two residents and has grown to a complement of 18.
The Methodist Family Medicine Residency Program is accredited by the American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and has Osteopathic Recognition. The program has received the ACGME's maximum accreditation cycles over the last 20 years.
Core lectures by faculty, specialists, and outside speakers are provided to residents daily in the Crawford Learning Center at Methodist Charlton. Wednesday afternoons can include procedure workshops on topics such as joint injections, contraceptive management, and dermatologic and cosmetic procedures. Every July the upper-level residents discuss common inpatient conditions and emergencies for our interns. We also have a series presented throughout the year, including HIV care, obesity, practice management/quality improvement, integrative medicine, and much more!
Residents start preparing for their board examinations during their first year. This ongoing preparation has resulted in a 100 percent pass rate of those taking exams immediately after graduating for the past 10 years.
Resident physicians gain invaluable experience learning inpatient and outpatient procedures. There is a weekly procedure clinic in the Methodist Charlton Family Medicine Center supervised by our faculty. These procedures include:
Thomas Shima, DO has led medical mission trips to Guatemala, Africa, and Peru. Resident physicians have the opportunity to learn about health problems, experience cultural diversity, and provide medical care in these countries under the supervision of the Methodist Family Medicine Residency Program faculty.
Residents work with our geriatrician in an outpatient clinic specifically for the other patient. This occurs during the geriatric rotation, with a primary focus on memory loss pharmacotherapy, limitations in the elderly, and community resources. Residents also actively involved with "Generations", which provides health and education events for adults 55 and older.
The cornerstone of our residency program is ensuring our patients understand their health problems such as diabetes, hypertension, and COPD. We have a clinical pharmacist that residents utilize to help maintain patient's blood sugar levels.
