Advanced treatment for head and neck cancers at Methodist Health System
At Methodist Health System, our team of physicians and staff is committed to providing the very best care possible to the people of Dallas and the surrounding area. We are dedicated to implementing new, innovative techniques for the benefit of our patients, including the new robotic surgical method. Our hospital is one of the first medical systems to offer transoral robotic surgery (TORS), which is performed using the advanced robot-assisted technology.
What is Transoral Robotic Surgery?
Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) is an innovative, minimally invasive approach for the treatment of various cancers in the mouth and throat region. Each procedure is performed through the mouth to allow for as little interference as possible.
TORS can be used to treat the following conditions:
- Oral cancer
- Tongue cancer
- Throat cancer
- Larynx cancer
Benefits Transoral Robotic Surgery for Patients
The minimally invasive TORS offers the potential for significantly better outcomes for patients. The incisionless approach can often eliminate visible scarring and disfigurement while also protecting the patient’s facial and neck tissue and muscle. Overall, this technique can reduce the chance of nerve and tissue damage that sometimes comes with open surgeries. When these nerves and tissues are damaged, it could affect the patient's ability to swallow, taste, breathe, speak, smell, and hear.
Other potential benefits to the robotic transoral surgery are as follows:
- Reduced blood loss
- Reduced risk of infection or complication
- Shorter hospital stay
- Faster recovery period
- Most patients are able to speak and swallow two to three weeks post-op compared to months after conventional surgery.
- Initial treatment with TORS may allow minimization of post-op chemo and radiation therapies
